A peek into Awaken the Soul...

I confess. I have an obsession with angels.
When I was approached about writing for the Havenwood Falls community, it took less than one second for me to decide on angels as my paranormal ‘creature’. Awaken the Soul gave me the opportunity to take my signature romance and likable characters and kick them up a notch with special abilities. Win-win!!
Viv and Breckin’s story was the fifth released in the Havenwood Falls High storyline. If you’re not familiar with Havenwood Falls it is a collection of stories set in the same town by multiple authors. You will see character crossovers but each author (unless specifically stated) writes their tales as standalone.
Viv and Breckin have TWO books: Awaken the Soul and Avenge the Heart. You can comfortably read these two stories without diving into the other Havenwood Falls books.
I would love for you to take a chance on these two the next time you’re feeling in the mood for something a little extra.
Available on #KindleUnlimited and on Amazon.

Here’s a peek at the beginning…

White.
Everywhere I look. Pure, undiluted, untouched.
Colorado in December.
Banking left, the tip of my wing disturbs a snow-laden pine bough, scattering ice crystals. The mountain forest is peaceful this late in the afternoon, though the threat of a storm lurks in the gray sky. A gust rolls in from the north, and I snap my wings, letting the airstream guide my path toward home.
How long will this peace last? This morning’s message from Elias served as an eerie reminder of my time limit. Four months. Tucking my wings, I shift, free-falling toward the ground, dodging trees as I dart in and around the woods. Freedom. I arch skyward, shooting high above Mount Alexa. The ground, the falls, the trees—they are blemishes on a snowy white canvas.
A scream penetrates the peace. I twist, levitating among the clouds, my gaze narrowing on the ground far below.
The crimson trail, smeared for yards before the dense forest covers the evidence, is hard to miss.
Blood. Thick, human blood.
This is Havenwood Falls—it’s not an abnormal occurrence in the forest. But . . .
I dive, lured by a scent that burns my nostrils and confuses my senses.
I’m on the ground within moments of her scream. Her keening death cries prick at my skin, sending an unfamiliar sensation skittering up my spine and across my wings. Angry snarls join her moans. I should leave, yet I press on—following the blood trail. The creature drags her instead of making a clean kill. Most shifters kill, rather than play with, their food. I maintain distance, preferring to remain in the good graces of the other supernatural beings within Havenwood Falls. Angel or not, minding my business keeps the peace. History has proven this. The world is a better place when all creatures, good and evil, play nice together. That type of thinking will be my downfall in four months, if I’m not careful.
An unnatural calm claims the still woods, and my senses sharpen. I move forward as an ache builds up in my chest. Her cries diminish, but her scent strengthens. It’s familiar. The spicy combination of ginger root and mint. I duck beneath low branches and break through thicker brush, my steps quickening as I track them. Another growl disturbs the woods, and I pause. Twenty feet ahead, a shadow of fur and menace crosses my path—retreating. The feeling in my chest intensifies like a fist crushing my heart.
Ginger, mint, and something—more. They inundate me as I maneuver around a thick tree and come to a stop.
She is bathed in blood. Her long golden hair spreads around her head, a silken halo on a snowy pillow of white. From my vantage point, I cannot see her face, but her scent—her perfume—gives her away.
Vivienne Freeman.
And above her lifeless body, he is ageless and brings with him the kiss of death. A reaper. His corporeal existence remains unseen to the human eye.
Her name begs to be spoken. A kick to the gut, it is an urge unlike any other. The image of her, two desks in front of me in chemistry for the past few months, is superimposed on the gruesome scene before me. The wisps of hair framing her face, her elegant profile, the way she hunches over her desk while she works. Movement breaks the memory. The reaper’s swirling mixture of light and dark extends toward her face, and a thread of black touches her forehead reverently. The perceived intimacy compels me across snow and blood, my wings bared as a warning to this angelic host.
“Leave her be.”
Reapers have no affiliation with Heaven or Hell. They’re vessels of Death. Wardens sent to usher souls from this life into the next. I’ve had limited interaction with others of my kind, but I know about egos. I’m the son of an angel, with a human soul, thanks to the woman who gave me life. One of the Nephilim. In hierarchy alone, I win.
Dropping to my knees, I take in Vivienne’s shredded jacket and blood-soaked clothing. Her face matches the snow—pale, deathly. Her lips colorless. Her heart? My hand presses against her chest. The pulse is faint, but it beats. Barely.

A peek into After The Fall...

Did you know you can read After The Fall for FREE if you’re a Kindle Unlimited subscriber? You totally can! In fact, you can read ALL my books in Kindle Unlimited. Pretty nifty, if I do say so myself.

So, during the month of May, I’m taking the time to catch you up on all my titles. Let’s start with #Rutledgeboy Austin and his gal Cassie. While Austin was introduced in the original From the Wreckage trilogy and Cassie appeared in All That Remains, their story is written as a standalone. After the Fall kicks into rated R territory—whereas From the Wreckage was PG-13—with a good dose of suspense and thrills in addition to the drama and romance you would expect from this series.

AUSTIN

She’s this enigma.
A beautiful mess.
A brilliant mind with a sharp tongue.
Our first meeting, she stopped me in my tracks.
But she wants nothing to do with me.

CASSIE

He’s only a guy.
Gorgeous with a million-dollar smile...
But still, a guy.
I can ignore the unfamiliar softness of his brown eyes.
I can ignore the way he walks, stops, and stares as though he’s waiting for something.
He’ll lose interest. They always do once they know they’ll get nothing from me...

Here’s a peek at the first chapter:

The Ending . . .

I blink, setting off a bomb of excruciating pain. A mirror has exploded within my head, the shards tearing fissures through my brain matter, chasing the lurking shadows from my mind.
“He’s waking up. Tell them he’s waking up.”
A voice like a gunshot speaks from above me. Loud. Jolting. I turn away from the noise, and a click reverberates, filling my ears as a searing slice of pain screams up my neck, shooting into my jaw.
The shadows return, pressing me down, down, down. I gasp.
“Hey, dude, don’t move.” I feel a sudden pressure on my forehead. “We’ve called 9-1-1. Stay still.”
My mouth fills with sour bile as I attempt blinking again. My eyes won’t open, not completely. My vision is reduced to a slit of light. A glowing face. No. A face, lit by the glow of a cell phone and outlined by the night sky. My mouth opens and nothing comes out. My tongue is thick, coated with the tang of metal. I swallow. Blood?
“Is that—” A feminine voice joins the deeper one above me. She’s further away. Standing, maybe? Her gasp is audible. “Ray, that’s Austin Rutledge.”
Ray’s gunshot voice startles me, “Holy—”
Yes. Yes, I’m Austin. What happened? Why won’t the words form?
“What about the other—?” the female’s voice waivers. There’s sniffling. A sharp intake of air. Is she crying? The pressure on my forehead lessens. What did she mean by “the other”? What is “the other”? Answer her question, Ray.
There’s a faint whir of sirens in the distance.
“They’re almost here. Hang in there, man.”
I attempt drawing in a deep breath, wheezing at the pain and lack of oxygen. What is wrong with me? Think, man, think. Where are you?
A scream explodes in my head. A memory.
It’s female and blood-curdling.
“Damn it,” the words tumble from my lips, blood pooling in my mouth. I twist, spitting out the thick warmth, gagging on it, and on the fear in her scream. Dread coils within my gut.
“You shouldn’t move. You could have a spine injury,” the wavering female voice advises. Spinal injury?
My mind scrolls through sounds and images in an attempt at figuring things out. There was a scream—she screamed, didn’t she?
Why can’t I remember?
“What do you think happened?” the girl asks Ray. His reply is a low mumble, their voices fading as the sirens become louder as they come closer.
I blink. I have to concentrate to accomplish the simple movement—my forehead wrinkling, my teeth gritting. I have to force it. Each breath is an order, not an act of human nature.
Ray moves out of my line of sight and I focus on the sky. The night is black. No city lights or buildings. It’s dark pillows of gray clouds painted against an inky sky with pin prick stars peeking in and out of view.
Red flashing lights break into the haze.
I grip at the cold grass beneath me, my fingers digging into the ground for leverage as I attempt sitting up. It’s pointless. My entire left side throbs with pain. I vaguely remember something striking my arm. Do I even have an arm left? I can’t feel it, but I’m pretty sure it’s there. I hope. I know it was there because earlier she was holding onto it. I see it. I see her—laughing up at me, holding my arm, making a joke.
“C-c-c,” the gurgled sound barely touches the air beyond my lips as fire and darkness press down me. Sirens fill the air, much louder now. Doors slam. New voices speak. My eyes slip closed as hands probe. I float between two worlds. Darkness and pain. Darkness fights harder, winning . . . except—
Her scream . . . her voice.
I jerk awake but don’t move. I’m tied down. Wincing, I force my head to clear. To see. To speak.
“Cassie.” Her name is stronger this time. My chest tightens as though my air has been cut off.
A face appears before me. “There you are. It’s going to be okay, Austin. We’re—”
“Cassie.” Blood dances over my taste buds as I raise my voice. “Where’s Cassie? Where is she?”
The face morphs into a frown, shaking back and forth.
No, don’t shake your head at me. Where’s Cassie?
My body goes weightless. A gurney. An ambulance. The pieces of the puzzle sort themselves, understanding sinking in. I’ve woken to a nightmare. I’m being loaded into an ambulance. I’m broken. The police are here. The medics are here.
Cassie?
She’s not here.
I blink, forcing my eyes wider—and I vomit as the ambulance doors slam closed. A medic tilts the board I’m attached to sideways as the feeling of movement sets in. The ambulance drives away from the wooded field where my body was found, leaving behind the couple who found me. Leaving behind strobes of red and blue lights.
Leaving behind a black body bag.

One last thing, would you PLEASE consider leaving a quick review on Amazon and Goodreads (if you use that site) when you’re finished reading? Reviews let new to me readers know that their time would be well spent wrapped in my stories. xoxo ~Michele

What I read: September 2019

I had a few misses this month where I read, then gave up when I found myself not fully invested in the story. Here are the ones I DID finish in September!

I Hate YouI Hate You by Ilsa Madden-Mills

A fun college read that balances angst, football, and sex pretty perfectly. Second chance lovers should love I Hate You.
Cruel Prince: Royal Hearts Academy #1Cruel Prince: Royal Hearts Academy #1 by Ashley Jade

I don't read bully romances because the MCs are oh so likeable. I read them for entertainment. Cruel Prince was entertaining—in a totally wacked way.

Where Good Girls Go To Die (Good Girls, #1)Where Good Girls Go To Die by Holly Renee

The cover and title might have you thinking you're in for a mystery or something dark but this is totally a brother's best friend/second chance romance. Though it wasn't as dark as I expected, it was totally addictive and I read this bad boy in one day. I really dig Holly's writing you should give her a try if you haven't yet.
Cruel Intentions (Rydeville High Elite #1)Cruel Intentions by Siobhan Davis

Okay, I tried to ignore this one but I'm weak for these dang bully/elite rules of the school books. I'm pathetic, I know.
This one is horrible—the characters are disgusting, the plot is over the top, the depravity has a capital D, so of course, I'm loving it.
If you're a sucker like me, you'll love it too.

*I want to clarify the writing is NOT horrible. Davis knows how to write a book. It's what's in the book that's horrible—in all the right ways. ;)
Twisted Betrayal (Rydeville High Elite #2)Twisted Betrayal by Siobhan Davis

If you think book one was over the top book two is over the top, on crack.
I'm still gonna have to read three to see how this all shakes out, tho.

Warning: LOTS of triggers.
AnotherAnother by Fiona Cole

Dirty. Dirty. Dirty Ian and Carina.
Read this sucker in a day. The characters are tied to the Voyeur series but Cole does a great job explaining anything you missed if you didn't read those books and Another stands just fine by itself. The plot isn't exactly new but if you're a lover of surprise pregnancy stories you should check this one out.
Fumbled Hearts (Tender Hearts #1)Fumbled Hearts by Meagan Brandy

Once the H got his act together he was ridiculously sweet. The hows and whys on this one are a bit convoluted but overall it was an enjoyable story with a few characters you really want to know more about.
Lots of girl on girl hate and player jocks here.

What I read: August 2019

The Guy on the RightThe Guy on the Right by Kate Stewart

What a fun read! It's amazing what can happen when you stop looking at people on the outside and get to know them inside. This fun college romance proves that.
Quirky characters, fresh plot... highly recommend.
ImpactImpact by Haley Jenner

Heartbreaking and gorgeous story about putting your life back together after a traumatic event.
This is one that will make you hurt.
Broken Wings (Dark Legacy, #1)Broken Wings by Jaymin Eve

Le Sigh ... I'm such a sucker for these dirty guilty pleasure type reads.
Broken Trust (Dark Legacy Book, #2)Broken Trust by Jaymin Eve

When I sit down to books described as dark romances with rich boy clubs and sassy girls I know I'm sitting down to a few hours of unrealistic fun. Just like book one, book two delivers on all the tropes one would expect from this type of story. It's steamy delicious fun. Don't analyze it, just go with it.
Broken Legacy (Dark Legacy, #3)Broken Legacy by Jaymin Eve

Just what you would expect from the finale to this series—over the top.
Tangled Love (Chaotic Rein Book 1)Tangled Love by Haley Jenner

Revenge isn't always the sweetest...
A somewhat Romeo and Juliet type of tale here where Romeo blames Juliet's family for his past so he plots revenge. I think there are missed opportunities to dig deeper into these characters and their relationship (beyond the sex) but overall I enjoyed the story.
Jersey SixJersey Six by Jewel E. Ann

Warning: lots of abuse triggers here
This is a dark read. I hated all the MCs at one point or another and loved them too.
A refreshingly different game of revenge is played out in Jersey Six and it was nice to have a heroine who was most decidedly NOT a damsel in distress. Another great read by Jewel E. Ann.
Coming Up RosesComing Up Roses by Staci Hart

This is a fun contemporary romance with a little P&P bend to it. I would love to read more about the Bennet siblings love lives. Read this one when you need a little pallet cleanser between heavier titles.
Ruckus (Sinners of Saint, #2)Ruckus by L.J. Shen

Four very bad boys and their love stories. Vicious is still my fav hothole thus far.
While Sinner of Saint (parents) and the All Saints High (offspring from the first series) spin-offs are listed as standalone reads I recommend reading them in order. I went from the first in one series to the first in the other, then realized how much information I lacked because I didn't know the backstory. I'm now backtracking.
I love LJs stories, she hasn't done me wrong yet.
