A little art tease from #AftertheFall

Just a little #TuesdayTease from #AfterTheFall to get you by. It might seem like a simple conversation about art to you, but there's a point (hello, foreshadowing) to this.

“These pieces are so beautiful,” I sigh more to myself, but the student employee nods next to me.
“They are. My grandmother had a cameo brooch. I always loved it. These remind me of her.”
“How are they made? It’s engraving in stone, right?”
“Engraving and carving. The artist uses chisels and acid, and all sorts of tools. Then they refine the piece and add all the little details. Look at this one for instance—” she leads me toward a plate I’d admired earlier.
It’s blue and white and depicts a woman painting a picture in a Greek setting. On The Terrace by Thomas and George Woodall.
“See the detail? The buildings in the background at her feet, the canvas she is painting.”
I lean closer to the plate—it’s not much larger than a dinner plate—just skinnier and a bit longer—and she’s right. The Parthenon is in the background of the plate, and there are detailed lines in the landscape portrait the woman is portrayed as painting. “I didn’t notice them,” I breathe, studying the piece closer now.
“Most people don’t. Most people see the beauty on the surface, the obvious, but so often in art the beauty is deeper. You have to take the time to stare, to get to know it, to find it.”

FYI, the piece discussed in the book is actually located on the A&M campus in the Forsyth galleries in the Memorial Student Center - all places mentioned in After the Fall.

Paper Planes and Other Things We Lost
Genre: Clean Teen/YA Romance

ABOUT THE BOOK

On June 18, 1992, Flight 397 crashed off the coast of Long Island.
But this story isn’t about the crash. Not completely.
This is a story about two high school seniors living very different lives, who share one connection: they both lost parents on that fateful flight.

Slowly, letters bridge the gap between California and Pennsylvania as Ruby Kaminski and Brett Pratt find a way to remember the past while looking toward the future.

This is a story about hope, paper planes, and the other things they lost.

SNEAK A PEAK

Prologue

Dear Amber,
Did you know you’re more likely to be attacked by a shark than die in a plane crash? I find that interesting since I never go in the ocean, but I’ve been on a plane ten times. So, I guess I’m more likely to die in a plane crash than be attacked by a shark, but maybe it’s different for you.
I thought beginning this letter as if you already know me would make the concept of a total stranger writing to you a little less weird, but now that I’ve thought about it, I realize my fascination with plane crash facts might be weirder. But I like weird. So, hi. If you didn’t catch it from my return address, I’m Ruby Kaminski from Fremonton, California. My mom died on Flight 397 with your parents. Though, can we really say they died when we have no idea what actually happened to them? Let’s refer to them as MIA. No, I’m not in denial. I’m painfully aware that they aren’t coming back, but I like facts. And the truth of the matter is most of the people on Flight 397 are MIA.
You’re probably wondering how I managed to get your address. I have my ways. Besides, I thought it might be good to connect with someone who understands what I’m going through. Though I believe our circumstances are entirely different, and there’s no way for me to understand what you’re going through, I’m hoping we can relate to one another on some level.
Do you ever wonder if, after the plane exploded, the passengers were washed up onto a remote island, and now they are kicking back, drinking coconut milk, and sun tanning under a palm tree? Maybe they are eating fresh seafood cooked over a fire and sleeping under the stars?
It’s a nice thought, don’t you think?
If you’re okay with weird, feel free to write me back. I’m full of it.
Sincerely,
Ruby Kaminski

#Review In This Life by Christine Brae

First, my disclaimer. I do NOT read to review books. I read books I want to read, and sometimes I write a review. I've read books for my very best friends that I have LOVED beyond words and not written them a review. I have also read books that I do not care for and not written a review. I am not paid in money, favors, likes, chocolate or anything else to leave reviews for books.

Often times we are told as authors to not review other authors books. I HATE that mentality because I have always been a reader and as a reader I have an opinion. What I do believe in, is never bad mouthing a book. What I love you might hate, and what I hate you might love. Opinions are just that. Opinions.
This year I'm attempting to share more of the books I do love. I've always shared what I'm reading with you—through Pinterest and Goodreads—but I will now work to leave a few reviews.

NOTE: If I do not review a book that does NOT mean I didn't like it.

My review:

Quite simply a beautiful love story.

In This Life, isn't your normal girl meets boy and falls in love tale. It's a story of friendship and betrayal, of love and pain. And very much a story of fate and master plans.

I firmly believe there are times in our lives when we have no say in the matter. When our paths are mapped out by someone much more knowledgeable than us and we can't fight it. Falling in love isn't always a choice.

Ms. Brae has taken this idea and mixed it with beautifully flowing prose. She weaves fantastic description in with heart-wrenching and warm dialogue using just the right balance.
Her believable characters may frustrate you as they make their decisions, but that is the mark of a great book. A book that a 2AM had me reading through tear-blurred eyes and sniffles.

In This Life, is worth the trip around the world Ms. Brae takes you on.
