I’m primed for this. No hesitation. I sprint to the edge of the rooftop, close my eyes, and leap into space.
They erupt from me a second later, two invisible wings of pure power that deliver me from my free fall and into the sky. I open my eyes, fill my lungs with the cold morning air, and feel the grin spread across my face.
It’s my morning ritual, to hit the skies when the faintest light of dawn breaks over the horizon, when I have most of the city and all of the sky to myself. Not that anyone can see me up here anyway. My deimos, the power that makes this possible, also shields me from human eyes whenever I get my wings.
Deimos. It’s the conduit between the demon soul and body. The word means “dread” in ancient Greek. Fitting given that most of the time, I do dread it. When you’re born with only a borrowed soul, you have to steal souls to keep yourself alive. At least that’s how the theory goes. But I refuse to do it. I hate that my deimos hungers for souls almost constantly. I hate that I can always feel it burning in my blood. I hate the fact that it makes me a monster.
My self-loathing is necessary. It’s what keeps me from giving in to darker temptations.
I concentrate on the right side of my body and bank hard in the same direction. Catch the air currents and ride them like a wave. The city is partially shrouded in low clouds this morning, and I shoot straight up and let them engulf me. I hover inside for a moment, watching water droplets crystallize in front of me like magic.
Now, my favorite. I bullet through to the layer of clear sky above the clouds where the air is thin. I savor the feeling for a full minute until I become light-headed and drop back down through the clouds.
Not a day goes by when I don’t wish for a normal life. If some power existed that could allow for that, I would accept it in a heartbeat.
But if I could keep one thing about being a demon, it would be this. When I’m up here, I can imagine the world is brighter than it really is.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Originally from upstate New York, Helen Boswell spent several years of her early adult life tromping around in the city of Buffalo with frequent trips to Toronto, Canada. These two cities in particular serve as inspirational settings for her urban fantasies, and while Helen has since moved to live in the southwestern United States, she will have fond memories of urban life and high-heeled sneakers for all eternity.
Helen earned her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University at Buffalo and dedicates her time to teaching biology and other fun things to college students, spending time with her wonderful family, and eating chocolate while writing.
The YA urban fantasy MYTHOLOGY is her first novel and the first one in the Mythology Series.
